Life beyond the classroom at Plymouth College is vibrant and engaging, especially during evenings and weekends. Our diverse programme offers enriching activities, fostering new skills, friendships and memorable experiences for our boarders.
Evening & Weekend Activities
Diverse Evening Pursuits
During weekday evenings, our boarding pupils benefit from a structured yet supportive environment. Supervised homework sessions are run by academic staff, who are readily available to offer extra guidance and support where needed, ensuring academic progress continues beyond the school day. This dedicated time helps pupils develop good study habits.
Beyond academics, boarders have regular use of the school’s excellent sports facilities. This provides a fantastic opportunity for them to unwind, stay active and pursue their sporting interests, whether it’s a casual game with friends or more focused practice, all within the safe and convenient setting of the school campus.
Exciting Weekend Adventures
Weekends for our boarders are filled with opportunities for adventure and exploration. We organise a variety of off-site group activities, making the most of our prime location in the South West. These excursions are designed to be both enjoyable and enriching, helping pupils to build team spirit and grow in confidence.
Trips can range from visits to the cinema and exhilarating paintballing sessions to scenic boat trips exploring the coastline. Other popular activities include moorland walking on Dartmoor, surfing at nearby beaches, or trying out dry-slope skiing. These experiences provide a fantastic break from academic routines and allow pupils to discover new interests.
Vibrant Plymouth Location
Our location within the bustling centre of Plymouth, Britain’s ‘Ocean City’, greatly enhances our activities programme. Plymouth is renowned for its educational excellence, its leading role in marine science and a vibrant annual calendar of events and cultural activities, offering a rich backdrop for pupil experiences.
The city truly has something for everyone. Pupils can explore the shopping mall featuring local and global brands, catch the latest releases at the multi-screen cinema complex, or enjoy West End shows at the award-winning Theatre Royal. The historic Barbican and the iconic Plymouth Hoe also host numerous outdoor events.
Exploring Devon & Cornwall
The stunning natural landscapes surrounding Plymouth provide incredible opportunities for outdoor pursuits. We are bordered by the beautiful expanse of Dartmoor National Park, where pupils can engage in invigorating moorland walking and other outdoor activities, even enjoying overnight stays at our charming school cottage, Whiteworks.
The picturesque beaches of Devon and Cornwall are also easily accessible from the College. These stunning coastal locations are perfect for a range of popular water-based activities, including surfing lessons, sailing, coasteering adventures and kayaking expeditions, allowing pupils to fully appreciate the exceptional natural environment of the South West.
School-Wide & House Events
The specifically organised boarding activities wonderfully supplement the extensive array of clubs, music and drama opportunities, theatre trips, outdoor pursuits and sports matches that take place for the whole school community during lunchtimes, after school and at weekends. Our boarding houses also host their own special celebratory events, fostering a strong sense of community, such as popular Christmas and Halloween parties and the memorable Leavers’ Dinner.
Ease of travel, with good access to local airports like Exeter and Bristol and chaperoned services to Heathrow, ensures our boarders can conveniently join these activities or travel home for designated breaks, enjoying a truly English boarding school experience.
